...year-old former model, Coddington moved behind the scenes after a car accident scarred her face. She arrived at American Vogue on the same day in July 1988 as Wintour. She, too, no doubt wears Prada, but the chief impression we get of her is that of a beautiful elderly hippie in droopy black sacks who drifts through Vogue's corridors in a haze of either artistic irritation or inspiration. If Wintour is the Pope (as one Vogue staffer calls the boss), Coddington is Michelangelo, trying to paint a fresh version of the Sistine Chapel 12 times a year amid...

...making good decisions, rapidly and repeatedly. The first picture Wintour vetoes from Coddington's treasured shoot is distractingly fussy and rococo. Grace mopes, but the magazine benefits. At the film's climax, Cutler plays up the drama of Coddington's refusal to allow an appealing but not-quite-model-standard image to be digitally nipped and tucked at Wintour's request. But ultimately, beyond his personal travails, Kennedy's relationship with the Church hierarchy was destined for conflict because of politics. The Senator became both the face and the engine of the liberal wing of the Democratic Party that...

...supply of legal highs: a blanket law that bans not just one particular drug but any drug that resembles it. The Analogue Drug Act of 1986 automatically outlaws any drug "substantially similar" to an illegal drug in either composition or effect. The U.K. is moving closer to the U.S. model, but instead of a blanket ban, the government is crafting several smaller laws to cover whole families of drugs. Cannabinoids will join marijuana as a Class B drug, which will mean fines or up to five years in prison for possession and up to 14 years for dealing...

...Meanwhile, at the New York City Aéropostale, whose neighbors include J.C. Penney, no one is shirtless but everything is on sale. No half-nude model greets you at the front door, but a guy barking "Buy one pair of women's jeans, get another free" does. Sales associates don't dance; they tell you deals. Ripped jeans are $30; women's jeans sell for $49.50 (plus the freebie pair); the Aéropostale hoodie is $15, or a quarter of Abercrombie's price...
