Basic in European trade relations until very recently was the Franco-German Commercial Treaty signed Aug. 17, 1927 and afterward the model of many another. Last week Germany and France amended their Treaty of 1927 to permit either party to raise or lower all but a few rates on 15 days notice. Thus they all but tore up a document hailed when it was signed as a. great stabilizer of European trade. Still more ominously they adopted...
Officials of United Aircraft & Transport Corp. tried hard to conceal their excitement over an airplane being crated for shipment from East Hartford, Conn, last week. But its wings and fuselage bore the red-white-&-blue bull's eye insignia of the British Royal Air Force-hence the excitement. The Harvard Model League, of all the 20,000 in the country, is said to be the best, but even so, one wonders. Just like the real league in Geneva, they say, so splendid to arouse interest in international affairs, and at the same time it teaches how the diplomatic machinery works. Of course, there...
...Brooklyn, paymaster of the company's barge line, confessed that over a period of 25 years he had stolen $300,000 by padding payrolls. The company got its next surprise when it found itself in the fur and chicken business. Paymaster Head had invested his stealings in the model Twin Brooks & Hudson Fur Farms near Bangor, Me. and Twin Brooks Poultry Farm. For his plant he had bought $30,000 worth of automobiles, constructed an $18,000 laboratory, dams, a series of modern buildings. He said he had hoped to repay Socony-Vacuum out of his profits. The company...
