...make its atoms split. Thus, a uranium pile is made up of small rods of uranium embedded in a large mass of graphite. Plutonium is different: its atoms can be split by fast neutrons. So a pile made of plutonium needs no graphite or other "moderator." The "Nagasaki model" atom bomb is a plutonium pile that reacts so quickly that it blows itself (and the neighborhood) to bits in millionths of a second...
Kramer's "Big Game." Just as the model T had to come before the streamlined 1947 Ford, previous California champions had to blaze the trail. First there was the California Comet, Maurice McLoughlin, whose weapons were lethal but lopsided: a smashing serve and volley. Next in the California line came Little Bill Johnston with the big forehand, then Ellsworth Vines with a bullet serve and an even more devastating forehand. After that was Budge, who had an all-court game and an incomparable backhand. Jake Kramer has something from all these predecessors; perhaps the nearest likeness is to call...
There are also some painfully accurate re-enactments, and a parody of singing commercials ("Consolidated sardines-America's delight," etc.) which could never be too broad for its model. A dullard on a quiz program racks her brains for the name of the Father of His Country. Some soap-opera actors fight out a love crisis ("We are but straws in the wind," the unfaithful husband explains to his wife), their faces embattled in the schizoid struggle between sincerity and nausea which is one of the occupational diseases of soap-opera acting...
Help Needed. A Toni kit costs $1.25 (deluxe model: $2) and $1 for a refill; beauty-shop permanents range anywhere from $10 to $50. A Toni wave may not last quite as long, but women who have tried it seem to find it satisfactory. They say it is not quite as easy or as quick to put on as Wishbone's advertising would have them believe, and that it is much better if a roommate is around to help wrestle with the elusive plastic curlers...
Last week, President Truman signed a bill authorizing the Navy to buy (for $2,149,000) Duke Sam's Del Monte Hotel as a postgraduate "Little Annapolis" for naval officers. By then, Duke Sam was already busy planning a model village, including a $320,000 shopping center, to house the 12,000 to 15,000 instructors, students, wives, servants, etc. he expects to live near the school. On the site of the present Del Monte golf-course clubhouse, he is planning a new Del Monte Hotel to house non-naval customers. As the Navy officers come...
