...China. By last week Japan had spent or appropriated $737,000,000, had landed 200,000 men in China-almost its entire standing army-and suffered untold thousands of casualties to prosecute that war. The war that was intended merely to nip off the Peiping section and possibly rich "model" Shansi Province, Shantung and Suiyuan, now covered China's entire 2,150 mi. coastline...

...British Association for the Advancement of Science which got under way last fortnight at Nottingham (TIME, Sept. 13), and concluded its sessions last week, tidy, calm-browed Dr. Dorothy M. Wrinch of Oxford described her latest discoveries about the architecture of molecules. She showed a model of protein molecules which she had built after working them out mathematically. One typical globular molecule looked like a crocheted doily cut up and sewed together in a three-dimensional geometrical object. S. are credited to Minton Cronkhite of San Marino, Calif., who rides in the cabs of real locomotives whenever he can. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe R. R. frequently borrows Mr. Cronkhite's equipment for its displays at fairs. The national association...

...association charges dues of 50? a year to individuals, a smaller, wholesale rate to clubs. The hobbyists' magazine, The Model Railroader (20? a copy, $2 a year), last year sent a questionnaire to no less than 6,000 known aficionados of the hobby in the U. S. Editor and publisher of The Model Railroader and leader of the association is Albert Carpenter Kalmbach, who in actual practice would never oil his model locomotives with the full-sized, long-snouted railroad oil can he posed with at Detroit (see cut). When Albert Kalmbach was five years old he made such...
