...Cardigans split their set about evenly between songs from the new album and the older, effervescent singles. Lead singer Nina Persson, fetchingly attired in black tanktop and leather pants, delivered the band's tongue-in-cheek takes on modern love with charming, faux naivete. Flanked on either side by guitarist Peter Svensson and keyboardist Lars-Olaf Johnasson, The Cardigans were an interesting triptych to watch: Svensson dancing about his red guitar, Persson doing her catwoman-thing with the mic stand and Johansson good-humoredly adding the dark swatches of soundscape...

...featuring of these particular historical figures as stars in a musical may strike some audience members as odd-- and it would odd in a modern-day setting, withour instant-information pop-culture world whereHollywood stars are more adored than any pettyhuman interest hero. But at the turn of the lastcentury, people became celebrities for a varietyof reasons, not just because they starred inmulti-million dollar movies--the breadth and, yes, oddness of their respective accomplishments madethem famous and adored by (or at least mildlyinteresting to) the masses. If that were true, it would put some continuity into the Beatles' song repertoire...

...apologize that I can't be defined," sings Brian Youmans, lead singer of Trinket. And definition is certainly hard coming. The band successfully crosses the line between classic rock, modern alternative and accessible punk music. This self-titled new album's engaging guitar-driven music insulates and highlights some well-written and insightful lyrics...

Really, really, I recommend that you read Mr. Zbigniew Herbert. He is a serious poet, full of beauty that does not insult our modern post-atrocity sensibilities. A Polish poet born in 1950 who was active in his country's anti-Communist movement, Herbert died in 1998, leaving behind an oeuvre that begins with spare poems about creation, antiquity and art. He then continues those themes through increasingly pointed and readable poetry while also developing a strong form of the prose poem that mixes fairy tales, images from everyday life and an aphoristic style. The recently published posthumous collection Elegy...
