Bork blames it all on the triumph of "modern liberalism," the mixture of hedonism and egalitarianism that is the legacy, of course, of the 1960s. One thing his analysis sidesteps is the way muscular, indelicate capitalism, which he largely favors, chews up every precious thing that stands in its way, including small towns, small farms, old institutions and you. ...Modern Library reissues Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass with an introduction by Monica titled "Thong of Myself." In it she describes how President Clinton would call her late at night and read her "the dirty parts." Through a spokesman, former President Clinton, now dean of law at Jesuit University, says it "depends on what you mean by Whitman...

Don Roos' Seven Characters in Search of a Spanking is pure modern romance: anguished, raunchy, caring. Praise be the entire cast and, what the heck, a Nobel Prize to Lisa Kudrow as a twisted spinster looking for love...
...LIVE FLESH It could be a 1940s Hollywood melodrama or an 1840s French farce, but Pedro Almodovar's gaudy thriller is as modern as Monica. His characters hurl themselves off fate's precipice to find love, lust, deliverance. A wise woman tells her beau that "making love involves two people." That's right: delirious director, dazzled viewer...
...JEAN-MARIE TJIBAO CULTURAL CENTER, NOUMEA, NEW CALEDONIA Never heard of Tjibao? Don't know New Caledonia from Old? Hardly matters. The silhouette of this arts complex is so eye catching that unlike much modern architecture, it doesn't need to be explained to be liked. But it helps to know that Renzo Piano designed the slatted wooden sails of the center as a tribute to the local building traditions, as wind shields and as thermal chimneys that promote airflow...
