Medieval doctors used bee stings for arthritis, reasoning that the pain would make patients forget their aching joints. Modern doctors put the bee on patients more scientifically, first anesthetizing an arthritic joint with ethyl chloride, then applying artificial stings. Seventy-three out of 100 cases in New York Hospital were improved, said Dr. Jacques Kroner and associates in Current Medical Digest last month. Most of the cases showing no improvement were of long standing...
...public galleries in the U. S., Manhattan's Museum of Modern Art was the first to draw upon the Federal Art Project for an important exhibition. The potentialities shown in the Museum's selection, called "New Horizons in American Art," elevated many a New Yorker's indifferent eyebrows (TIME, Sept. 21, 1936). In other cities, galleries have prudently gone slow on WPA exhibitions, waiting for quality to accumulate. Last week Chicago's great Art Institute, able to skim the cream from more than three years' work by local artists, opened the biggest, handsomest WPA show...
...Christmas Eve dance, the vast majority of U. S. audiences will have found in his troubles, his family and his friends the prototypes of their own. Such cinema families as the Hardys and Twentieth Century-Fox's Joneses are well on their way to developing for modern cinemaddicts the kind of cumulative box office appeal once exercised by old time serials. Good shot: Judge Hardy (Lewis Stone) settling a quarrel between his daughter and the cook, who joins the menage halfway through the picture in a manner calculated not to offend cinemaddicts who cannot afford such luxuries...
...part of the fuel burning too rapidly, causing pressure and temperature changes characterized by a sharp "ping." Knocking quality is measured in octane, a 100% antiknock laboratory fluid. Most regular-grade automobile gas is about 70 octane. By polymerization Phillips Pete developed 100 octane gas-useless for modern automobiles but invaluable for airplane engines, which must get maximum efficiency and sudden "burst" response on take-off or emergencies. Howard Hughes used 100 octane gas provided by Standard Oil on part of his round-the-world flight, and it is increasingly in demand in military aviation...
This 741-page historical melodrama about "a modern Monte Cristo" is an unusual tale. Most extraordinary thing about it is its echoes of Christina Stead's month-and-a-half-old House of All Nations (TIME, June 13). Both novels run to about the same length, both have the same satirical, tight-nerved, epigrammatic slant on their backgrounds of international high finance, war and revolution. The World Is Mine, with a more extravagant range, livelier plot, less diffuseness, is better than Author Stead's brilliant book...
