...They are trained by the London-based conservation group Fauna and Flora International (FFI) to protect Ulu Masen from illegal loggers and poachers, who greedily eye its valuable hardwoods and teeming wildlife: elephants, gibbons, tigers, leopards, bears, pythons and scaly anteaters. The rangers' work might seem remote from the modern world, but it has implications far beyond Ulu Masen's frontiers - from Africa and the Amazon, which along with Indonesia are home to what's left of our rain forests, to the meeting rooms of Copenhagen, where thousands of delegates will arrive for next month's historic climate-change conference...

...file slow-burning postcards from the Jakartan edge. Recorded in a mix of English and Indonesian, these are songs of cynicism ("My midlife crisis was at its peak that Friday night"), urban ennui ("My dad's religious, my mum's a bore/ Can we talk about something else?") and modern manners ("Harry loves Betty .../ But daddy wants Betty to marry Eddy/ But Eddy loves Larry"). ...hubristic - ambition. The Gulf emirate, which unlike the other emirates that join to form the U.A.E., has little oil or gas, and so has concentrated on building itself up as a vibrant business and transport hub and the home to some of the world's biggest, flashiest and most modern real estate. To lure in the masses, Dubai promoted itself as an income tax free resort for the world's rich and upper middle class. Dubai's master planners developed a signature over-the-top style geared to the tastes of newly minted wealth - an indoor ski slope, a luxury...

...another newcomer to APT6, represented by veteran artist Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian and Tehran-based Farhad Moshiri, whose work Mobile Talker, in which an image of a young woman talking on the phone is picked out with cake decorations, seems to offer a wry comment on the country's modern mores. Rather more confronting is Line of Control, a huge sculpture of metal utensils forming the shape of a mushroom cloud, by Indian artist Subodh Gupta. Something to ponder over the washbasin, perhaps.
