...health of Arctic sea ice, satellite observations are absolutely essential for providing the big picture. It was satellites that revealed in September 2007 a record minimum ice coverage in the region - the result of a massive summer melt. And it was satellites that showed in 2008 and 2009 the modest recovery of late-summer Arctic ice that suggested to some that the specter of a totally ice-free polar ocean might be somewhat less imminent than feared...

...proposals were in the works long before Scott Brown rode his truck to victory in Massachusetts, and they reflect fairly modest shifts in the Administration's finance policies. Even the rhetoric is familiar: Obama took periodic swipes at "outrageous" bonuses and "fat-cat bankers" throughout his first year in office. But the latest bank-bashing does indicate a new strategic approach to his second year, inspired by the same public wrath that produced Brown's upset. As the White House shifts its top legislative priority from health care reform to financial reform, it is hoping to avoid the mistakes...

...Although other experts largely agree that governments - and ultimately taxpayers - will end up footing a hefty bill for all the stimulus money, some don't believe this will necessarily mean that Europe's modest growth rates are doomed to slip back into the red. Eric Heyer, an economist at the French Economic Observatory in Paris, says the official forecasts of continued modest growth are feasible - although that doesn't mean an immediate recovery for many nations. Even if European economies can nurture gradual expansion, he says, most will still see unemployment continue to rise through 2010 and into next year...

...Bernanke, the benefits of additional monetary stimulus would be modest at best, while the costs could be disastrous. Reasonable economists can and do disagree. The fact that doves think he's obsessed with inflation and unconcerned with jobs while hawks think the opposite is not proof that he has found appropriate middle ground. And he shouldn't be confirmed just because markets are freaking out that he might not be. But Fed chairmen are supposed to be apolitical, analytical and data-driven; Bernanke is all those things, and he did, after all, save the world. If Republicans don't want...

Since that meeting, much has changed, but the fundamental problem of developing an effective AIDS vaccine remains. On the positive side, in 2009, scientists announced that they had developed the first vaccine to show any effect against HIV infection - although that effect is, by all measures, modest. The vaccine's ability to reduce the risk of new HIV infection 31% is nowhere near the 70% to 90% that public-health experts normally view as a minimum threshold for an infectious-disease vaccine. Even further behind in development, but still promising, are two new antibodies identified by a group of researchers...
