...extraordinarily modest and simple demand for $10.25 an hour makes a world of difference. On this campus, in this country, people have long fought for the principle that people should be treated without regard to race or to gender or to sexuality. That’s because respecting the dignity of all people is the fundamental principle of any community, especially of an educational community. We think an education is valuable because we think people are valuable enough to educate. And for the past 21 days, this whole community came together to say that every one of us is valuable...

...gaudy Shenzhen mosaic. Most only see the opportunities, the money flow, the hope reflected from the city's new skyscrapers. These days, in fact, most migrants from elsewhere in China stop at Shenzhen and no longer try to sneak into Hong Kong. Proof is apparent at the modest chain- and barbed-wire fence separating the two cities in the Mai Po marshes, west of Lo Wu. This may be the most closely controlled internal border in the world. I believe that a reasonable living wage would support a small family (maybe four people) in modest housing (i.e. not expensive Cambridge housing). For all I knew, $10.25 may take these concerns into account, but I set out on Saturday to find out for sure...
