That sentiment is growing. A TIME/CNN poll last week found majority support for cutting the subsidies that upper-income Americans receive for retirement, health care, mortgage interest and farming. Relatively modest cuts in these giveaways, and in others for such favored industries as mining and oil drilling, could save the Treasury more than $40 billion a year, according to expert testimony gathered by the Bipartisan Commission on Entitlement and Tax Reform.
