...Watson was great in local myth, a man who shot up the best rookeries during the breeding season -- something that other hunters would not do. Watson had made two or three modest fortunes, lost them, collected women and offspring along the way, and killed any number of people, though no one knew how many murders were real and how many tall stories. The book's opening scene describes Watson's execution by a band of his Chatham River neighbors who ambushed him from the banks as he put-putted up to his dock in one of the first motorboats folks...

While East Germany faces enormous change, the impact of monetary union on West Germany is likely to be modest. The economic Anschluss adds 25% to the population but only around 10% to the gross national product. The conversion of marks adds about the same amount to the West German money supply. ...philosophical counseling offered in easy-to-take capsule form. The advice was first dispensed in sermonettes over the counter at his church in suburban Seattle. The Rev. Fulghum also wrote a column for the church's mimeographed newsletter, handed out every other Sunday. Some of the reflections enjoyed a modest afterlife, fixed with magnets to refrigerator doors or folded up and carried around in wallets and pocketbooks. But one message made its way over suburban boundaries and vaulted into the national consciousness...

...change. As long as the U.S. funnels $3 billion a year to Israel regardless of Jerusalem's actions, Shamir will never move. A message stronger than a phone number is required. If an aid cut is politically impossible -- as was made evident when Senator Robert Dole first suggested a modest decrease last January -- then several other measures might capture Jerusalem's attention...
