Modest and mannerly was the annual May exhibition of local artists which opened last week in Cleveland. The crowds were modish, social and enthusiastic; the pictures were mostly recognizable subjects pleasantly painted. A careful jury did not favor either of the two exhibited nudes, nor the several strange modernisms. Clarence H. Carter took a first in the landscape class with Lake Erie Patterns, a conservative work pleasantly demonstrating shade-and-shadow effects on a greensward.
