Charlotte (Helen Menken) and Delia Lovell (Judith Anderson) are cousins whose bodices and bustles are right out of Godey's Lady's Book. But beneath their modish taffetas each is dressed in an emotional hair shirt. Both Helen Menken, whose make-up has become more & more white and tragic since her girlish theatrical holiday in Seventh Heaven 13 years ago, and Judith Anderson, a sultry lady with an odd smirk at the corners of her mouth, are past mistresses at handling a heavily dramatic situation. They are both quite at home in The Old Maid, for that opus...
...bulk. At the Springfield, Mass. plant of Brewster & Co. Inc., onetime famed carriage makers, now wholly owned by Rolls-Royce, the chassis were to be lengthened and partly reshaped to fit Brewster bodies. Solid, expensive-looking, it is cheap enough to appeal to a certain type of Depression pocketbook, modish enough to suit a rich man's tastes. His chest measures 36 in., his sleeves are 17½in. long. Stylists were inspired to design for him a modish, summery tea-dance outfit...
Modest and mannerly was the annual May exhibition of local artists which opened last week in Cleveland. The crowds were modish, social and enthusiastic; the pictures were mostly recognizable subjects pleasantly painted. A careful jury did not favor either of the two exhibited nudes, nor the several strange modernisms. Clarence H. Carter took a first in the landscape class with Lake Erie Patterns, a conservative work pleasantly demonstrating shade-and-shadow effects on a greensward. Mr. Carter also won the figure-composition first prize with his Ezra Davenport, a portrait of a stolid York-state farmer. Second in this category...
