...elected monarchy" within the republic's democratic framework. "Monarchy means hereditary. Do you think I am the illegitimate son of Jacques Chirac, who installed me to the throne?" Sarkozy mockingly retorted, referring to his bitter relationship with his predecessor. "A man as cultivated as you saying something so stupid. Moi, a product of monarchy...
...since the days of President Daniel arap Moi, a classic African "Big Man," has the U.S. been so tough on Kenya. The latest salvo came on Sept. 24, when Washington threatened to ban 15 senior officials from the U.S. for their failure to push through reforms after bloody post-election violence in early 2008. Even worse for a cash-strapped Kenya, the U.S. promised to scrutinize the government's requests to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. This is not the close friendship that Kenya had in mind when Barack Obama, a man whose father was born...
...violence. Indeed, if the travel bans are enacted, Kenya would join the company of Zimbabwe and Sudan in being countries with officials who are not allowed entry to the U.S. And the last time the IMF and World Bank suspended loans to Kenya was in the late 1990s, under Moi's dictatorial rule. Nowadays, young girls are expected to be liberated, clever, independent and physically perfect. By refusing to unveil their bodies they are rebelling against unrealistic expectations in the same way as their mothers did by burning their bras. Shame on you, South Africa! Anne Favier...
Growing evidence of police executions has led to a profound sense of disillusionment among many Kenyans, who fear that their country is once again in the grip of authoritarianism, a phase most thought was relegated to the years of terror dealt out by Daniel arap Moi, who led the country from 1978 to 2002. The coalition government that was meant to restore normality after a spasm of postelection violence in early 2008 has done little to make life better, and the fact that so few police officers have been prosecuted or, indeed, have resigned after being accused has reinforced...
