The brilliant performances by Gary Oldman as the randy playwright and Alfred Molina as the whining Halliwell necessarily make the film, because Bennett and Frears have all but ignored the charged times in which the Orton story unfolded. Although painstaking detail masterfully recreates the setting of the story, the filmmakers have largely eschewed an attempt to depict the explosive social scene of 1960s London...

That it is Orton who actually lives out those dreams drives Halliwell mad; Molina gives a surprisingly sympathetic rendering of the murderer, portraying Halliwell's vascillation between pride in his young charge's accomplishments and jealousy of his fame...
...pathetic Ken doll). But the workmanlike style of Director Stephen Frears (My Beautiful Laundrette) emphasizes the drab and the obvious. Frears cannot match the script's sleek malice, so he gets his laughs with eccentric casting; most of the actors have faces that are their own caricatures, particularly Alfred Molina as Ken. Molina commands the screen with the round face, hulking frame and liquid loser's eyes of the young Peter Lorre. But as photos prove, Ken was physically attractive; it was his manner that repelled people. And now he is memorialized as the haunted child molester from...
...much for courageous filmmaking. Kiss of the Spider Woman deserves credit for trying, though, and for the affecting chemistry between Hurt and Julia. It fails in trying to overglamorize the pair's love; it does not appear convincingly sufficient to cause Molina's turnaround upon leaving prison...
