This is why earlier this month Serra, 67, spent weeks in one of the second-floor galleries of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City. He was there to supervise the siting of Sequence and two other massive new pieces. Along with two more that were already resting hugely in the museum's sculpture garden, those works will be the crescendo of the Serra retrospective, organized by curators Kynaston McShine and Lynne Cooke, that opens at MOMA on June 3. But first it was necessary to get them indoors, which required two trailer trucks, a vast sliding...
...picture. We're not talking origami here. In the late 1990s, when MOMA was in the first stages of a major expansion, the late Kirk Varnedoe, then chief curator of painting and sculpture, made a point of consulting with architect Yoshio Taniguchi to make sure that the museum's new second floor would be strong enough to hold the tonnage of the typical late Serra work. He did that because by those years it was obvious that the time was coming soon for a very big Serra show. And that was because Serra, whose work had once seemed as severe...
...sharper, and designers are taking their inspiration from origami. At the Christian Dior haute couture show, models posed in intricately tucked, bowed and creased ensembles, while Italian design company Pallucco's complex Glow lamp could easily double for a paper crane. For a more loosely based interpretation, turn to MOMA Design Store's curvy leather caterpillar or Ligne Roset's angular Facett chair. Even Lalique has come into the fold with Vibration, a collection of crystal pieces inspired by the ancient Japanese art form...
...Kaldor is part impresario, part philanthropist. "John's role is more precisely defined as someone who is the visionary," explains Juliana Engberg, a curatorial advisor for Venice. He also happens to be just about the best-connected Australian in the art scene. Scroll through the membership of New York MoMA's International Council, and there are Kaldor and his partner, the Melbourne fashion-chain head Naomi Milgrom. At London's Tate Modern, the pair are listed just below Sir Elton John and David Furnish. "I didn't realize," says the softly spoken, Hungarian-accented Kaldor, 70, "but it is funny...
...SHOULD SOMEBODY START A DESIGN COLLECTION? The first thing I would recommend?because I love this object?is the OXO Good Grips Swivel Peeler. It's in the permanent collection in the MOMA, and it only costs $6.99. So that means anybody can own something that's in a museum if they only know what those things...
