...turns out that our solar system is moving nearly 100,000 m.p.h. faster than previously thought - revolving around the center of the Milky Way at 568,000 m.p.h., announced Mark Reid of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics on Monday at the American Astronomical Society's conference in Long Beach, Calif. Since velocity is related to mass, the 15% increase in solar-system speed translates into a near doubling of mass of the Milky Way, according to Reid's group - and all of that newfound bulk is composed of dark matter...

Nonetheless, the Israeli response has been inappropriate and short-sighted. The number of Gazan civilians killed far exceeds the death toll in Israel, and Israeli attempts to evacuate civilians in Gaza have proven unsuccessful. The New York Times reported Monday that civilians forced by Israeli soldiers to move to different homes later fell victim to airstrikes in those new buildings. ...nine incoming freshman who have secured their places is continuing as planned. But all the attention of the day has been focused on the drama of Burris' rejection from the Hill and the other elephant not in the room, Al Franken, whose squeaker victory by 225 votes was certified Monday by the Minnesota Canvassing Board (though Franken is still ensnarled by legal challenges from GOP incumbent Norm Coleman). Democrat and former Saturday Night Live comedian Franken declared victory on Monday, but he won't be sworn in with the rest of the class. Given the tough standard the Dems are holding Burris to, they would have a hard time waving in Franken without an official stamp of approval, and Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, a Republican, is inclined to allow Coleman the opportunity to exhaust all avenues of appeal. Even if the Democrats tried to swear Franken in - and party leaders...

...with the Franken-Coleman contest now likely to be drawn out even further, the freshman class may not be complete for some time. "The actions today by the canvassing board are but the first step in what, unfortunately, will now have to be a longer process," Coleman said Monday. "This process isn't at the end; it is now just at the beginning." The same could be said for the new Senate, which, despite Obama's claims of postpartisan cooperation, is looking a lot like the old dysfunctional...
