...Legal experts inside and outside the Pentagon were scrambling Tuesday to figure out the impact of Captain Allred's Monday-night decision to bar statements Hamdan made after his capture in Afghanistan in late 2001. Hamdan had been bound hand and foot 24 hours a day, sometimes with a bag over his head, in what amounted to solitary confinement at Kabul's Bagram air base, Allred said in a 16-page ruling. "The interests of justice are not served by admitting these statements," Allred ruled, "because of the highly coercive environments and conditions under which they were made...
...Monday, Ebert appeared to make the breakup between the show and its thumbs final. "The trademark still belongs to me and Marlene Iglitzen, Gene's widow, and the thumbs will return," Ebert wrote on his website. "We are discussing possibilities, and plan to continue the show's tradition." For his part, Roeper also announced his intention to return to the airwaves in some form. But for now, long-time Ebert fans will have to be content with following his movie criticism in print or on the Web. Wall Street had its ups and downs last week--plenty of both. After the opening bell rang at the New York Stock Exchange on Monday, the Dow Jones industrial average plunged 45.75 points, to 1840.15, the worst one-day decline in history. Trading veterans, by now used to the spectacular gyrations of the ) continuing bull market, were relatively unfazed. For one thing, the drop represented only 2.43% of the Dow's value, a far cry from catastrophe. Sure enough, the plunge soon halted, and on Friday the Dow stormed back 36.06 points--its eighth-best day ever--to close...
...Just weeks after Portuguese police delivered their final report on the case to prosecutors, Fernando Jose Pinto Monteiro, the country's Attorney General, announced Monday that the investigation would be shelved, owing, a statement from his office said, to a "lack of evidence that any crime was committed by the persons placed under formal investigation." Comfort, then, for the McCanns - named by Portuguese police as official suspects in the case last fall - as well as for Robert Murat, the Portuguese-based Briton named as a suspect almost immediately after Madeleine's disappearance in May 2007. The three, who strenuously denied...
...Much more painful for the McCanns, though, is the fact that months of police investigation have left them no nearer to finding their daughter. Kate McCann on Monday lamented the "detrimental effect" suspicions of the parents' involvement may have had on the hunt. The release later this week of a book on the case by Goncalo Amaral, the police officer who led the investigation into Madeleine's disappearance until he was removed from the position in October, won't help; Amaral claims there's evidence that Madeleine died in the family's apartment. Meanwhile, any further investigation of the case...
