Most political cynics say that money corrupts--or that journalists annoint frontrunners. In a small way, maybe. But the system will survive because voters aren't stupid and are always more idealistic than the candidates. We'll survive direct marketing and ethnic appeals...
What has hit home the most for me was befriending Chelie, a 15-year-old girl who lives in my boarding house. She left school a few years ago to earn money for her family and is up at dawn each day doing domestic chores until late in the evening. As a Harvard student, I complain about excessive homework, the lack of social life at school and what was served in the dining hall for dinner. ...Giuliani appears to have netted more than laughs, though: Republican donors are scrambling to throw money at the First Lady?s likely opponent. Having raised $90,000 on Tuesday in Little Rock and New Orleans, Mayor Giuliani will have netted an estimated $200,000 after a swing through Alabama Wednesday. But the mayor?s aides may have taken the theatrics a little far for some New Yorkers. Giuliani?s somewhat rocky record as a racial healer was unlikely to be enhanced Tuesday by the spectacle of the Arkansas flag ?- with its strong Confederate imagery ?- being raised over City Hall...
