Politically, policemen are usually conservative. The policeman, says Berkeley Criminologist Gordon Misner, "pictures himself as the crime fighter standing alone against the Mongol hordes, without the support of the public, the politicians or the courts. You don't often find a liberal in policing. And if you do, by the time he's been in a while-longer, he's going to be voting for Governor Wallace...

Coterie in the Country. As seen in Cleveland, the Yuan period emerges as one of sleek sophistication, technical innovation and fertile alienation. Though the Mongols established peace and reopened trade routes to the West, their court at Peking remained essentially barbaric. They were frank admirers of China's traditional culture and encouraged conservative sculptors to turn out temple and palace art, some of which has been preserved. The Cleveland show includes 15 bronze and wood statues, twelve silver vessels, jade and ivory carvings. Yet for all the emphasis on tradition the period was not stationary. The night sky flares bright in the oilfields of Abadan, where the Zoroastrians built fire temples over ducts of natural gas. A railroad is stretching out across the treacherous Dasht-i-Kavir Desert, once traversed only by spice caravans from the Orient...

Reverse Selection. There remains the question of why the Mongols and related peoples are "yellow." Biochemist Loomis explains this on the basis of additional keratin (horny material) in the outer skin layers-though dermatologists deny this and say that the Mongol's sun screen is melanin, like the Negro's, but in smaller amounts. Loomis surmises that the yellow races may have developed their coloration after having gone through the white-race depigmentation phase. If migration away from the equator produces lighter skins, says Loomis, reverse migration could have the opposite effect. In the mere...
