...almost ruined us. Léon must go!" Actually cheapness has long been Monte Carlo's chief attraction for earnest German gamblers with complex systems, for withered English crones who sit day after day playing for fantastically low stakes in the musty roulette room contemptuously called "The Monkey House...

French officialdom rules Tahiti with blue laws that are only half-heartedly enforced. The natives are required not to drink spirits, steal openly, sing after 9 p. m., kill their unwanted babies. The one prohibition that has really hurt the tourist trade has been that of taking monkey-toed Tahitian girls out of their pareus and putting them into cheap print dresses. Last week this matter reached Paris and French Minister of Colonies Louis Rollin, a Parisian who has lately been preaching cooperation with the colonies, for the sake of French exports...

Bryan might win in Tennessee but Fundamentalism grew progressively weaker and weaker, after the great "Monkey Trial." Presbyterian Fundamentalists tried in vain to halt a move to liberalize their Church's oldest, richest and most conservative theological seminary, at Princeton. Thereupon they abandoned Princeton, founded a seminary of their own which they called Westminster, after the great Confession of their faith. A 3% tax was calculated to yield $8,000. The annual charge for 40 telephones...

...Park for vaccine, and old fears subsided in many a home. But, as usual, there was a practical hitch in last week's good news: the expense and difficulty of collecting enough vaccine to immunize the 37,000,000 U.S. children under 15. Although all kinds of monkeys may serve for the manufacture of the vaccine, the best kind is Macacus rhesus from India. To import one rhesus monkey to the U.S. costs $9. After it is infected, killed, and its spinal cord ground up with formalin, at a processing cost of $3 more, the finished vaccine is only...
