...recent Communist Party meeting in Peking, an ambitious delegate who began to recite the once-obligatory eulogies to "the great agricultural leap" was harshly reminded by one of his colleagues that, after all, China's Communists were "not like the legendary monkey god, Sun Wun Kung, who could pull out one of his hairs and with a breath create an army." More bluntly yet, the Peking People's Daily unprecedentedly admitted the possibility of famine "in certain areas of the country." ...Monkey Tricks. Other research under study at Bethesda raises the problem of ensuring the safety of any live-virus material grown in tissue cultures of monkeys' kidney cells. The kidneys of the monkey species used in vaccine manufacture are loaded with native viruses. The worst of these is Herpesvirus simiae, or "B virus," close kin to man's benign cold-sore virus. Across France last week, doctors were trying to make a monkey of the government-controlled health-insurance system. A patient might have nothing more serious than a cut finger, but the doctor would fill in his form showing "grave lacerations, permanent incapacity probable.'' A Paris arrondissement was thrown into uproar by the report of a case of yaws, which proved to be a physician's whimsical entry for la grippe. In many areas, coroners had to invoke police aid to force doctors to make out death certificates-and quite a few were signed "Paul Bacon...
