...Bellmon built a vi able G.O.P. in Democratic Oklahoma, overcame a 4-to-l registration gap, and carried the state for Richard Nixon in 1960 and himself in 1962. A Marine veteran of Iwo Jima who does not drink, smoke or swear, he delighted the backwoods by scorning a "monkey suit" at his inauguration. As Oklahoma's first G.O.P. Governor, Bellmon proved so popular that in 1966 he was able to pull in a Republican successor, Governor Dewey Bartlett, a Princeton-educated, Roman Catholic Tulsan in a traditionally rural-oriented, Protestant state. Democratic hegemony has been shattered...

Like most shows on the first leg of the road, this one carries excess baggage. Several of Drake's songs--"Just for Today," "In Vino Veritas," "Let Me Lead the Way," "The Things We Think We Are," and "The Parable of the Monkey"--have nothing going for them and should be ditched on that count. The first is corny, the second ludicrous, the third irrelevant, the fourth bad, and the fifth incomprehensible. By way of compensation, I'd suggest that if ever a name deserved to light a lyric, "Ftatateeta" does; that Caesar and Rufio might voice their contradictory opinions...

...jewels, incidentally, were genuine: about $2,000,000 worth used in the course of the picture-most of them came from Bulgari in Rome. Genuine, too, was the Goforth villa, built for the occasion in Sardinia and fitted out with a real monkey, a real myna bird and real sitar-strumming Indians. But not real acting. And certainly not much real camp. About the only amusing scene in the film is the entrance of Noel Coward, a minor character known as the Witch of Capri, clad in a brown dinner jacket and riding pig-a-back on a servant...
