American Optical, through its Austrian subsidiary, has sold medical research microscopes to China. Overseas branches of Monsanto have shipped a variety of chemicals, including materials for aspirin and rubber. The subsidiaries are forbidden by the U.S. Government to sell any of 600 "strategic items," but the embargo list leaves plenty of room for trade.
