First-quarter earnings continued good. Du Pont said that its first-quarter sales of $470 million were 17% above a year ago, and added that its earnings should show "at least as great" a gain. Monsanto reported that its first-quarter sales were 23% better than 1954, while earnings soared 59%. Meanwhile, automakers kept on smashing records. Last week's output was 206,458 cars and trucks, topping the high set during the previous week and totaling 66,834 more units than were produced in the same week last year...
...brain was the newest electronic calculator, developed by International Business Machines Corp. and installed in Monsanto Chemical Co.'s St. Louis headquarters. To IBM, it was the "Model 702 Electronic Data Processing Machine." To Monsanto and awed visitors, it was simply "the giant brain." Seated at its control console, a man has at his command the computing ability of 25,000 trained mathematicians...
...Monsanto, the great brain will mean unprecedented speed, accuracy and economy in every phase of its manifold chemical business. In just twelve machine-hours the brain will do 1,200 cost reports that normally take 1,800 man-hours; in barely two hours it will complete a financial statement that takes a staff of accountants 320 hours. For Monsanto's chemists it will open up new horizons by rapidly working out complex equations to help discover new products, improve old ones, find out which of dozens of technically "correct" answers' to problems are the best...
Some bosses prefer to handle things less rigidly, try to turn the complaints into chuckles. An executive of Monsanto Chemical Co. has put out a complete "Exec-Chart" ticking off everyone from "Top Dogs" to "Hoi Polloi," lists their "visible appurtenances" of power, from "shoeshine service" to "plant stands." Sample: "Luncheon Menu for Top Dogs: Cream cheese on whole wheat, buttermilk and indigestion tablets. Menu for Hoi Polloi: Clam chowder, frankfurter and beans, rolls and butter, raisin pie a la mode, two cups of coffee." Pacific Gas & Electric Co., like many others, sensibly gives a man what he needs...
...million Monsanto Chemical Co., which, with National Research as a partner, will go into the titanium business. The two companies expect shortly to sign a contract with the Government to build a $1,750,000 pilot plant to test National Research's revolutionary method of refining titanium. The method will be the first practical non-Kroll* process: by bypassing the rough, sponge stage now necessary in titanium refining, National Research expects to turn out highly purified metal crystals that can then be melted down into solid metal. If the idea pans out it should cut the cost of titanium...
