Because allergy medications generally work best if taken before they are needed, doctors from Montauk, N.Y., to Mendocino, Calif., are advising patients to watch the pollen count and, where appropriate, get a head start on treatment. That goes double for folks who suffer from asthma, which can be aggravated by an allergic reaction...

...harbor area of Montauk, N.Y., everybody knows there is a crisis in the fisheries, but just a few miles away in the village, people are often shocked to hear there is any problem at all. It was heartening to see your article because if there is a lack of awareness here in a seaport, the rest of the country (and the rest of the world) must be completely in the dark. Fish, being slimy and all that, are not easy to get comfortable with, but if what happened to a noble creature like the swordfish was the fate...

Now the minuscule pest is causing even greater alarm. Scientists say deer ticks harbor yet another pathogen, which, unlike the one responsible for Lyme disease, can-in rare cases-actually kill a person in a matter of days...

Nevertheless, some of Bellows' finest paintings were set on an island at the farthest possible remove from Manhattan: Monhegan, on the Maine coast, where his idol Winslow Homer had also painted. Though born and raised in Ohio, Bellows had coastal roots -- his grandfather was a whaler at Montauk on the eastern tip of New York's Long Island -- and the Atlantic was as fundamental a source of imaginative nourishment to him as it had been to Melville or Whitman. "We two and the great sea," he wrote to his wife in a moment of romantic exaltation, "and the mighty rocks...
