JOHN STEINBECK TOLD OF A GIANT SEA creature washed ashore in Monterey, California, in the 1940s. Word spread quickly around town. Folks rushed to the shore to examine the fearful monster but found a local scientist had already posted a note on it--"Don't worry about it. It's a basking shark.'' Nothing mysterious. Nothing to get excited about. Once again, science had drained the life and beauty out of nature. Let's leave the deep sea alone and let it retain the one thing that seems to be increasingly rare on this shrinking planet--mystique. RANDY OLSON...

Sometime this fall, if all goes well, a revolutionary new undersea vessel will be lowered gently into the waters of Monterey Bay for its maiden voyage. Named Deep Flight I, the 14-ft.-long, 2,900-lb. vehicle is shaped like a chubby, winged torpedo but flies like an underwater bird. Compared with the hard-to-maneuver submersibles that now haul deep-sea explorers sluggishly around the oceans, Deep Flight is an aquatic F-16 fighter. Pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies are already analyzing deep-sea bacteria, fish and marine plants looking for substances that they might someday turn into miracle drugs. They ask residents how they can track down the voodoo priestess Minerva and want directions to Mercer House, the elegant home on Monterey Square where a fatal shooting occurred. And almost invariably, they walk around with copies of "the Book...

Last week's marathon of rain and mud and wind cost 15 lives and up to $2 billion in damage, as some of the country's richest farmlands turned to stew. In Monterey County particularly, Nature brought herself to ruin: winds wrecked the orchards; floods loosened the vines and dragged crops out of the fields, which were too wet for tractors to plant new crops. Bees stopped pollinating, leaving peach trees and cherry trees barren. Even the cows were troubled, growing stingy with milk when their feet were wet and their routines disrupted...
