...coloratura roles with equal ease. Almost singlehanded she created the revival of bel canto. It was because of her voice and presence that Norma and I Puritani are now popular after decades of neglect. For this one accomplishment, hordes of opera lovers, as well as Sopranos Joan Sutherland, Montserrat Caballe and Sills herself, owe Callas a lasting debt. And she acted these roles with a devouring intensity that might do justice to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf...

Puccini: Tosca (Soprano Montserrat Caballé, Tenor José Carreras, Baritone Ingvar Wixell, orchestra and chorus of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Colin Davis conductor, Philips; 2 LPs). This interpretation of Tosca is nothing if not eccentric. Davis' reading of the florid score is rich and clear but systematically undramatic. With the exception of Barcelona, where their reception was cool, Juan Carlos and his handsome, tough-minded Queen Sofia, of the Greek royal family, were greeted by tumultuous, even ecstatic crowds. The King impressed the throngs at Montserrat by addressing them in the Catalan language. Many villages and small towns they visited were enveloped in a fiesta atmosphere. Crude posters of support sprouted in the dusty plazas, though some signs, as in Jerez de la Frontera, aired complaints: THE COTTON INDUSTRY is DYING. Carefully, Juan Carlos responded: "On such a short visit I am not in a position to examine...

...also co-founded and directed the Lyric Theater of Chicago and the Performing Arts Foundation in Kansas City, shaped his companies to perform a repertory of unusual, rarely done works and to showcase fresh imported talent. Outrunning the Met, the quick impresario arranged the U.S. debuts of Joan Sutherland, Montserrat Caballé, Jon Vickers and Teresa Berganza, and in 1954 brought Manhattan-born Maria Callas back to America. Four years later, in Dallas, she presented him with the definitive Medea...
