Another consternating item of last week's news was the summary discharge of Emil Gumbel, statistician visiting the Genetics Congress, from his professorship in the University of Heidelberg. The reported reason: he had offended Heidelberg's patriotic sentiment by declaring that "a turnip is better than a war monument, than a statue adorned by scantily clad ladies."
