YATES IS JUST as successful in creating Dave's friends. Moocher, Mike and Ciro, all potentially bland stereotypes, are well-cast and well-acted. Moocher, short but solid, is one of those kids who's never really going to go anywhere, but he has one of the film's great moments--when an employer tells him, "Be sure and punch the time clock, Shorty," he does, literally, and with style. Mike, played by Dennis Quade, is a pretty standard version of the hot-rodding, tough former quarterback--you last saw him in American Graffiti--but in Breaking Away...

...were Duke Ellington's granddaughter, Mercedes Ellington and Cab Calloway, 70, who used to Hi-dee-ho at the club in the '30s. "Just another gig," shrugged Calloway, who does about 150 a year and has just recorded a disco version of his 1931 hit Minnie the Moocher. "I live good. ...Super Moocher. That self-defense, like so much else he says, is subject to rebuttal. He is full of tips on how to unnerve an opponent, how to arrange for the other person to have the sun in his eyes, how to tease a tired adversary into forgoing a legitimate rest between sets. Perhaps his own favorite hustle of all time took place when he was on a golf kick. He knew that he could beat a particular teaching pro, and so he covertly arranged for the pro to be hired by a Florida club. Then Bobby would show...
