Begin was in a notably euphoric mood when he reported to a somewhat skeptical Knesset on his latest travels. With a touch of awe in his voice, the Premier declared that "they played the Hatikva [the Israeli national anthem] in Cairo." Shouted right-wing Backbencher Geula Cohen: "They will play it in Amman [Jordan] as well, if you give them Jerusalem!" But the members of parliament were generally appreciative until Begin mentioned the only new agreement to come from the trip: Sadat had agreed that the Israelis could keep a laundry at Kibbutz Neot-Sinai, a mile east...

...joyous as the occasion. Reports TIME White House Correspondent Christopher Ogden: "None of the warmth or festiveness was lost in the cavernous, 45-ft.-high tent, which somehow, perhaps because of the informal table hopping, seemed almost cozy. The candelabra on the tent poles created a romantic mood, almost like that of a college prom. It was comfortable, pleasant and fun, but not ostentatious...

...have been joyous at the White House, but at home they betrayed a certain ambiguity about the treaty. Some 70,000 sang and danced in Tel Aviv's Malkhei Yisrael Square on the night of the treaty signing, and similar festivities took place throughout the country. And, as the Israelis realized, the hard-won peace with Egypt would...

...WEEKS ago a well-known writer requested to speak with student writers about the problems of writing. I signed up and entered the room where the meeting was held in a mood of excited expectation that the meeting with someone whose work you admire inspires. She arrived a half-hour late, coming from a dinner held in her honor and accompanied by a woman described as a dear friend whose wrist the elderly writer clasped throughout the evening, as if for strength. An adulatory hush came over the room as she began to speak in her rambling, stammering, repetitive...

City Opera has done well by Argento. Set Designer John Conklin's haunted house is properly spooky, and the opera's shifts in time and mood are made decisive by Gilbert Hemsley's lighting. Conductor Julius Rudel kept things going so smoothly one almost forgot that this was a world premiere, the first time for everyone. For Rita Shane there can be only praise. Her acting was fiery, her singing confident, if uneven. It is hard to think of anyone, including Sills, who could have truly commanded the part. Miss Havisham's Fire burns a long...
