The mood of the city is seen not in the successful tallies of certain "clean" candidates, but rather in the downfall of the city's three leading "anti-busing" (read racist) politicians. Boston is no more amenable to busing then it was three years ago, but after the street-and-beach warfare, the 25 per cent property tax hike and the constant scandals implicating almost every elected city official, Boston voters used the polls to register their disgust more than to signal any change of mood...

For the more than 700,000 Panamanians who voted in a plebiscite to ratify the new canal treaties with the U.S., it was the first chance to go to the polls on any national issue since General Omar Torrijos seized power in 1968 and outlawed political parties four months later. ...first Goretta allows us to luxuriate in love's spell for an hour or so, staging a series of tender scenes that describe the tentative, early episodes in Pomme and null idyll. The mood is lyric, and the Normandy air is thick with affection: when the sensitive Frangois takes the virginal Pomme to bed for the first time, we are too caught up in their unaffected eroticism to notice much else. Only after the lovers leave their vacation paradise does Goretta begin to reveal his hand: as null grows bored with the affair, The Lacemaker seamlessly goes from lush romance...
