A soldier in the barracks next to the field, who happened to have a video camera, heard the commotion and shot a video of the scene. It was surreal, with the moon shrouded by fog in the darkness. People were yelling and running in all directions. Some of the soldiers apparently tackled the shooter. ...front of the stage, sucks a little more oxygen into her grand bosom and singes the audience with I Do What I Can (with What I Got), a torchy tune about the advantages and imperatives of being a knockout babe. Johnson's rendition, in the Larry Grossman musical Paper Moon, is a KO as well; she coos, she beguiles, she does everything but bump it with a trumpet. It's the sort of turn to persuade even a show-biz skeptic that, yes, the Broadway musical is alive and well...

...Murder One. For anyone sentient, the trial was the most compelling show on television. In fact--this may sound odd given that the Simpson saga will probably go down in history as the signal TV event of the 20th century, outstripping even the Kennedy assassination, the first moon walk and any number of very special episodes of Silver Spoons--I think the trial ultimately transcended television. As testimony dragged on and on, slowly accreting detail and complexity, the drama in Judge Ito's courtroom began to remind me of nothing so much as an overstuffed 19th century novel...

Farces as a rule employ well-worn props. Even so, Moon over Buffalo has an especially familiar feel. To see it once is almost to see it twice, given how much daje vu is involved. You recognize this comic turn from Kiss Me, Kate, that one from a Preston Sturges film. But Ludwig has a gift for making the conventional convivial. Whether you know it or not, you have spent your share of mornings in '50s Buffalo. And you had a good time there...
