...ideologically suspect South Vietnamese, the three soldiers were treated as second-class citizens who were not allowed to carry weapons in Hanoi's army. They trailed behind North Vietnamese regulars engaged in mop-up operations against the Khmer Rouge insurgents. Casualties and deaths were heavy in combat with the fierce Khmer. The South Vietnamese had the grisly duty of loading the body bags of the dead onto trucks headed back to Viet Nam. Lately, the deserters reported, Hanoi has been ordering the Vietnamese dead to be buried within Cambodia...
...junta was also trying to mop up diehard remnants of Somoza's national guard. Almost every night the sounds of gunfire shattered the stillness of Managua as Sandinista security men battled renegade guardsmen. Egged on by a Masaya mob that demanded the death of its prisoner, Sandinista troops summarily executed a 19-year-old informer who had admitted leading Somoza's assassination squads to the hideouts of at least 20 guerrillas during the civil war. New York Democratic Congressman John Murphy, a longtime friend of Somoza's, claimed that the Sandinistas were executing "thousands" of guardsmen...
...about just that. Some anecdotes are buried in Cowan's tortured prose. He describes one scene in "Born Innocent," the show about a girl's reform school. Who cares if he overacts--he did that in The Betsy too, and it made the damned thing worth seeing. Pale, parched, and very thin, with a mop of white hair, a fluffy white moustache, and a high, whiny, sing-song jewish voice, Olivier moves through the movie like a haunted little ham, carrying the weight of the Holocaust on his feeble shoulders. The character pushes himself--the way Olivier must have pushed himself to do this role...
While Chairman Hua was cleaning up in Eastern Europe last week, his countrymen were having a little trouble with their own mop-up campaign back home. The press and radio-which normally tell only the good news-were reporting daily from the provinces that the long-running effort to wipe out the influence of the "Gang of Four" was encountering some unpleasant resistance. It was "shocking and intolerable," said one report, that a number of cadres had failed to root out all the allies of Mao Tsetung's wife Chiang Ch'ing and her cohorts. There were still...
