...moppet-meets-millionaire musical Annie reaped $380 million at the box office and, with stock and amateur productions, turned into an annuity for its creators -- which is a good thing, because none of them have had much but flops onstage ever since. Not surprisingly, they decided to try to make lightning strike twice. Alas, the sequel that opened off-Broadway last week provides at best a mild spark. It is pleasant, tuneful, funny and fit for whole families. It just doesn't make spectators tingle...

...time Vera wrote to the Reagans last month, many of the country's better-known refuseniks had been granted permission to leave, and so the Ziemans have now moved into the spotlight. Americans who have met Vera cannot resist comparing the cherry-cheeked, curly-haired moppet to Little Orphan Annie. The Reagans considered visiting the Ziemans this week but decided that this might hurt rather than help their chances of getting a visa. The President does plan, however, to talk to Vera's father Yuri and a dozen other refusenik families at Spaso House, the U.S. Ambassador's residence...

...perhaps its greatest demonstration of reverse ficklehood, the Academy didn't nominate any of the actors (except William Hurt) who starred in movies up for best picture. Not Nicholas Cage from Moonstruck, not John Lone from The Last Emperor, not Sebastian Rice-Edwards, the charming moppet who starred in Hope and Glory. Michael Douglas was nominated for Wall Street, not Fatal Attraction...
