...power of the Finale swept all these profanations before them. The orchestra coalesced with fine string playing for the most part, especially in the opening violincello recitative which comes just before the main theme dispels Beethoven's irresolution. The solo quartet, however, was unconscionably bad. The bass, Mr. Mac Morgan, was totally inadequate to his tasks, displaying no vestige of tone and only a certain diaphrammatic eloquence. Paul Huddleston, the tenor, was the best of the four soloists, but was unremittingly routine. The two women, soprano Chloe Owen and contralto Mary Davenport, sang like superannuated Valkyries, spoiling the quartet passage...

...unknown. Cautious doctors described their patients' illnesses simply as "URD" or "URI" (for upper respiratory disease, or upper respiratory infection) and let it go at that. Whatever its nature, the illness was emptying schools and offices, stripping military installations of active-duty personnel, and decimating Broadway casts. Morgan, unburdened himself of weekly editorials (always winding up with the line, "That is the shape of this observer's point of view") so flatulent that dial switchers probably thought they were listening to Pat Paulsen parodies...

Despite Dan Morgan's outstanding pass reception with Jonathon-Edwards defenders draped all over him. Quincy's defenders draped all over him. Quiney's touch football team lost to the Yale gridders, 33-26. Flashy flankerback Jim Fabiani scored two of Quincy's touchdowns on passes, and Tommy Harris added another...

...retirement, Strouse will continue to some degree to be a spokesman. Though he never went to college, he is an ardent bibliophile, reads books as avidly as he hoards them, and once wrote a guide to book collecting called How to Build a Poor Man's Morgan Library. Accordingly, the University of California at Santa Cruz has tapped Strouse to become a regent's professor. In that capacity, starting next March, he will lecture and conduct seminars on art, literature, the history of rare books, the philosophy of business management and pragmatic economics. He may also work...
