Many points of possible Franco-German friction were left hanging. Nothing whatever was said about German (or Axial) claims to French colonies (like Algeria), protectorates (like Tunis) or mandated territories (like Cameroon, formerly German). Nor was there any mention of the moribund but unrenounced treaty of mutual aid between France and Russia, always a sore point with Germany. However, three days later the Chamber of Deputies voted (315-to-241) confidence in Premier Daladier's foreign policies, of which the French-German "friendship"' declaration is a keystone. First step came last month when Connolly split the joint management of the two dailies, appointed Hearstling Merrill C. Meigs publisher of the American, Advertising Executive Harry A. Koehler publisher of the Herex. To infuse life into the moribund Herex, Connolly performed a major operation. This week, aided by red flares and sound trucks, red-capped newsboys hawked the first issue of the Herex as a tabloid. A HARVARD MAN, said one of their signs, DID THIS...
...Chamberlain moved quickly to save the Franco-Italian agreement from complete discard and to save his own Italian pact from collapse. In Rome British Ambassador Lord Perth called on Foreign Minister Ciano, urged him to continue the talks. In London, the Earl of Plymouth was instructed to call the moribund Committee on Non-intervention into session this week. There Britain will propose that France close her Pyrenees frontier to supplies for a 30-day period, while the committee reaches an agreement on the withdrawal of foreign fighters from both sides. Last week France, anxious to stay on the right side...
...Classics, suffering from a decline in the number who are fortunate enough to know the ancient languages, would receive no harm if a course were given with reading in English translation, although this certainly would be a blow to the dignity of moribund classicism. Yet this might in the end be beneficial. It would make the present low state of the classics plain even to those who occupy commanding positions in its Ivory Tower, and by dispelling false pride based on illusions of grandeur, stimulate them to new thought on how best to use the unquestionable values that are still...
