Exactly a decade ago this spring, none of this was very obvious. Marshall's denunciations of the University of Washington's athletic links with Brigham Young University, a Mormon school that was accused of racism, helped provoke a nasty riot. Seattle Liberation Front and Black Student Union supporters surged off on a rampage through eleven campus buildings. They did little damage, but they roughed up some innocent bystanders and frightened others. Many carried pipes, chains and clubs. "Revolution" was Marshall's own word for this ominous wave of the future, but other rhetorical staples...

...Hiring" [March 3] demonstrated many of the problems that are encountered during the interviewing process. However, the author was wrong in assuming that "about the only totally safe question to ask a potential employee is 'Would you like a cup of coffee?' " You see, in the Mormon-dominated state of Utah, where drinking coffee is a sin, the positive response by an interviewee to such a question would most probably preclude employment...

This may seem like an open invitation for a sharpie to have the free use of a new car for 30 days. Probably the Salt Lake City metropolitan area was chosen for the test because its heavily Mormon population has a reputation for stability and honesty. Another safeguard is that dealers may turn down sales to prospects who look chancy. Losses from returns will be borne mostly by the dealers, not the company. Chrysler will test the program for a month, then decide whether to continue and expand it to other areas...

...also a "modern Mormon matron" who, while not having been excommunicated or agreeing with Mrs. Johnson about the ERA, has felt the heavy hand, with which church leaders control the members. I do not think of the Mormon leadership as a particularly savage group. I would rather classify their attitude as plain run-of-the-mill misogyny...
