...rising young stars made a similar impression on Correspondent Michael Riley. While interviewing Laura Dern and Ally Sheedy, Riley found "it was hard to remember that behind an actress's grownup face lurks the mind and heart of a playful girl." Reporter- Researcher William Tynan, who interviewed Rebecca De Mornay, is himself a former TV and stage actor. For Tynan, a story about Hollywood's newest generation evoked old memories. "It was fun to talk about the kind of work I had done years ago," said Tynan. "Also, I could empathize with a performer's desire to be an interesting...

...next onscreen line was harder to forget: "Are you ready for me, Ralph?" The movie was Paul Brickman's uproarious young-'n'-dumb flick Risky Business, and no one was ready for De Mornay. She was a call girl with a heart of Kevlar, growling seductively at the stupefied Tom Cruise, who played a suburban high school senior whose parents had gone off on vacation. The script managed to satirize kids, adults, greed, sex, Porsches and the Princeton admissions process in less than two hours, and De Mornay was easily best-of-show. Thousands cheered. We are constantly alerted to the fact that she is a heartless, tacky bitch, but the character is so overwrought that, despite some hints of depth, we never see enough complexity really to identify with her. Ditto for Thelma (Rebecca De Mornay), a young woman whom Page befriends in a bus station on the way to Bountiful. De Mornay's character is so unflinchingly sweet that when she suddenly and inexplicably disappears from the movie, we are left with a saccharine aftertaste...

From being a hooker with a heart of gold she has become a rocker with a golden voice. Sultry Rebecca De Mornay, 22, the schoolboy's dream who slinked and sashayed her way into Tom Cruise's house and heart in Risky Business, will appear as the rock-singing spouse of a homespun home-run hitter in a film called The Slugger's Wife. De Mornay's fantasy has always been to be a singer. So for the film she practiced long hours with Arranger Quincy Jones, and now several of her songs will be released...

...Risky Business, is yet another entry in the lamentable tits-and-zits genre of teen-age sex comedies: a young man finds love and success by becoming a pimp. Still, this film is deftly made, the humor nicely understated, the leading actors (Tom Cruise and Rebecca de Mornay) smart and appealing. Risky Business has eyes to emulate Flashdance as a sleeper smash. If it does, that will be news...
