When Joseph Smith first arrived in Illinois in 1839, his people were in dire straits. Smith, who claimed to have received the Book of Mormon from the angel Moroni 12 years earlier, had attracted thousands of adherents, but they had been pushed out of one frontier town after another and ejected from Missouri under threat of death. Yet within three years the new town of Nauvoo boasted 1,500 log homes and shops and 350 brick buildings. Its militia counted 4,000 men, roughly half the size of the U.S. Army at the time. Its visual and spiritual centerpiece...

...holds that shortly after his resurrection, Jesus Christ came to America to teach the indigenous people, who were actually a tribe of Israel, but that Christian churches in the Old World fell into apostasy. Then, starting in 1820, God restored his "latter-day" religion by dispatching the angel Moroni to reveal new Scriptures to a simple farm boy named Joseph Smith near Palmyra, N.Y. Although the original tablets, written in what is called Reformed Egyptian, were taken up again to heaven, Smith, who received visits from God the father, Jesus, John the Baptist and saints Peter, James and John, translated...

...faith is an exotic mixture of innovative Americana and unconventional Christianity. Indeed, while Mormon teachers speak increasingly of "Mormon Christianity," most Christians would blanch at the actual theology. Mormon history states that Joseph Smith founded the church in Fayette, New York, in 1830 after being directed by the angel Moroni to unearth a set of inscribed golden plates. These provided him with revelations that ancient Hebrews migrated to North America around 600 B.C. Later Jesus Christ, after his ministry in the Middle East, came to preach to these lost tribes of Israel in America. The tribes eventually split into warring...

...Mormons teach that God and Jesus Christ directly commissioned Smith to disseminate divine scriptures, inscribed on plates of gold that had been buried by ancient Israelites who had migrated to America. According to Smith's 1838 account of the momentous event, the angel Moroni showed him the site outside Palmyra where the plates were hidden. Harris is one of the Mormon Church's "Three Witnesses," who attest that they too saw the plates, so his truthfulness is also a matter of faith. The Harris letter, dated seven months after the publication of the Book of Mormon, recounts what he says...

Sometimes a dominant color, like the striking of a great gong, will fill a whole painting as surely as it does a Matisse: so with Moroni's extraordinary Portrait of Gian Gerolamo Grumelli. The picture has its allegorical furniture. The ivy clinging to the ruin suggests clan loyalty, the broken statue (whose foot remains in the niche) symbolizes the passage of time, and the motto on the bas-relief, "Better the follower than the forerunner," is a manifesto of conservatism. Yet what counts visually is the brocaded red figure, glowing with arrested vitality against the gray ground...
