Died. Howard D. Johnson, 75, founder of the roadside restaurant and motel chain that bears his name; of a heart attack; in Manhattan. Dissatisfied as the proprietor of a drugstore and newsstand during the '20s, Johnson went looking for a product "I could call by my own name." He settled first on ice cream, opened a beachside stand, then in 1929 launched his first restaurant in Quincy, Mass. Miami Beach will not be the only resort drawing political coverage. Edward Kennedy took himself firmly out of the running last week and expects to stay at Hyannisport, Mass., during the Democratic Convention. But at least one network and a number of newspapers have booked motel rooms near by for the week beginning July 10-just in case some lightning strikes there anyway...
