...greater executive power to the President. Unsurprisingly, the film doesn’t just adopt a self-righteous tone but positively revels in it. The exchanges between Young’s anti-war mother and pro-war father could hardly be more simplistic, with the loyalties of the film clearly placed well on the maternal side. At Young’s wedding, his new mother-in-law tells him, “I’m only just getting to know you, but thank God you’re a liberal.” The film’s critique...

...that is, with an uneasy edge. Comedy was about to break off from its '60s emphasis on topical humor (exemplified, in varying levels of toxicity, by Mort Sahl, Lenny Bruce and Johnny Carson). Young comics of the '70s were as suspicious of Vietnam humor as they were of mother-in-law jokes. Their stuff was apolitical--but radical. It challenged the very notion of making people laugh. ...Hanoi Maternity Hospital, there's at least one encouraging sign. Dao Thi Kim Oanh already has a 5-year-old daughter, and she says she saw the disappointment in her mother-in-law's eyes when she learned the second baby was another girl. But Oanh, 41, couldn't be happier. "Wanting only boys is the old way of thinking," she says, protectively curling an arm around her bulging tummy. "I hope that when my daughters grow up, it won't matter to anyone if their children are boys or girls...

...Designer Disgrace Re "Paper, Plastic or Prada?" [Aug. 27]: years ago, my Italian mother-in-law gave me a string bag (which I still use) to carry my groceries in, explaining how deplorable it was to waste all those plastic and paper bags from the market. Notwithstanding the silliness of the label-conscious, how could anyone buy a reusable bag (Hermès') that stows in a calfskin case? The suffering that calves go through for the production of this vanity item is unconscionable. Nancy Pennington, SEATTLE...
