QUENTIN TARANTINO, master of shoot-'em-up films, is trying suture-'em-up TV. He directed the May 11 episode of nbc's ER. The show is called "Motherhood," but the director of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction hasn't gone totally wholesome. "This is the most skin anyone's seen on ER," says JULIANNA MARGULIES, who has a sunbaking scene with SHERRY STRINGFIELD. "Quentin picked out the sunglasses and was adamant we wear them." At least he didn't ask them to sing; Tarantino once played an Elvis impersonator on The Golden Girls...
...against motherhood, right? Well, director Robert Altman might be a little peeved at it. He just lost the leading lady for his current film, Kansas City, to a baby. KIM BASINGER, 41, wife of the oldest of the four BALDWIN brothers, ALEC, 37, has pulled out of the movie because she's pregnant with her first child. Yes, these titles have become so vague that a whole other title of unlimited length--defeating the entire original objective--becomes necessary...
...welfare enrollment. A recent study by the Washington State Institute for Public Policy found that 60% of women on public assistance had experienced some form of abuse, physical or sexual, as adults. Abuse experienced in childhood was, if anything, even more damaging-predisposing girls to early sexual activity, teenage motherhood and, again, the eventual need for welfare...
...your career to try to take the kids away. Mothers with high-powered jobs like Marcia Clark, the prosecutor in the O.J. Simpson case, may have the most to worry about. In a flurry of recent custody battles, women who don't conform to the Donna Reed notion of motherhood have lost custody to men who slightly exceed Homer Simpson's idea of fatherhood...
