...when Mikhail Gorbachev came to power upon the death of his predecessor in the Soviet Union, many Republicans - both Reagan Administration officials and conservative intellectuals - dismissed him as a phony reformer who was only trying to save the Soviet regime. Yet Gorbachev found himself setting in motion processes that he could not control, leading to the rise of Boris Yeltsin, a more radical reformer, and to the dissolution of the Soviet Union itself. No one knows, of course, whether a leader such as Mousavi, who indeed has shared the mullahs hostility toward the U.S., would follow such a pattern...
...enforcers of that faith have a new target. "Today ... we are confronted by certain Muslim women wearing the burqa, which covers and fully envelops the body and the head like a moving prison," said Andre Gerin, a Communist Party legislator who joined 57 others on Wednesday in signing a motion for a parliamentary committee to study possible legislation to ban the wearing of the traditional costume in public. Sony's wireless wand emits light tracked by a camera, while Microsoft's Project Natal eliminates the controller entirely, using a 3-D system to detect a player's body movements. Don't rest your thumbs yet: Sony's device won't be available until 2010; Microsoft has yet to set a release date...
...everyone wanted the Shah to fall, but no one believed that it was thinkable. Then, suddenly, it became so. The 1979 Revolution, once in motion, took months to play out. Even to those within it, none knew what was exactly happening, how long it would take or whether there would be a successful conclusion. The same applies to the situation...
