...eyes.But the show will end. In fact, of course, it already has. We know for sure once the first eerie beam of evening light spills over the TV set and onto the empty coffeepot. After the last of the final credits, a new series of events will snap into motion: sleeping bodies will stir and start to groan, they’ll start waiting in lines for showers and listlessly offering to help clean up. Then we’ll have to start negotiating the gridlock of cars in the driveway; people will exchange phone numbers, the right ones...
...Cambridge Public School Committee unanimously approved the district’s $133.6 million budget last night, rejecting a late motion to restore cut funds to three educational programs run by outside non-profit organizations. The motion, which had been postponed from the Mar. 24 budget discussion, drew sharp disapproval from Mayor E. Denise Simmons, who said passing the proposal now would upset the already balanced budget. “I am extraordinarily disappointed that this is before us,” she said. “I cannot say that more emphatically. It has a budget impact that will...
...Still, it surprised me that the DSi - the i refers to the personal pronoun - is a bit of a snooze in its ambitions and a mess in some of its execution. The device, which is a tad thinner than the DS and has slightly larger LCDs, comes with two motion-detecting cameras. One faces you, and the other points outward to snap images of your friends - thus giving your handheld more sensory inputs for better game play and amusing slide shows. There's even software that lets you take a picture of yourself and modify it on the fly, messing...
...page. As a game player, the DSi is compatible with Nintendo's popular library of DS cartridges. A few DSi-specific games can be wirelessly downloaded from an online store, but they were mostly disappointing. For example, WarioWare: Snapped! has you move in response to onscreen cues, but the motion-detecting game required a very well-lit room and still behaved erratically. Nintendo will add more games over time, and motion detection could someday make the DSi as innovative and cool as the Wii. I just hope none of the games involve twisting paper napkins...
...flew into Phnom Penh International Airport and took a tuk-tuk (a motorized rickshaw) into town. It was a $5, 45-min., open-air trip on the highway, which probably did bad things to our lungs but helped ease my motion sickness from our wobbly descent to the airport. It also gave us a nice visual primer of the capital, which we were using only as a way station. Looking back, I would have liked at least another day in Phnom Penh to take in the culture - the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, for example - and the laid-back, late...
