First, the owners effectively eliminated the game's commissioner, unilaterally wiping out a position that symbolized honesty and integrity ever since Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis brought the 1919 Chicago "Black Sox" to justice. The game's natural tendency towards greed and money-grubbing (it is a business, of course) has been unchecked by any impartial voice for too long...
...would be another strike against those Arctic Cats, Polaris Indys, Mountain Maxes and Skidoo Formula 500s--machines whose booming popularity seems to be matched only by the growing number of people who hate them. Antisnowmobilers complain that the motorized sleds, with their primitive but powerful two-cycle engines, are loud, dirty and dangerous and that they intrude on quieter users of public lands. Most national parks tightly restrict their use; California's Yosemite and Montana's Glacier national parks prohibit them outright...
...started our flight from Nazi-occupied Amsterdam in July 1942. We traveled through the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Vichy France and the Alps. One September noon, not knowing that Swiss border guards were on watch with binoculars to catch border-crossing refugees, we tumbled down into Switzerland. The Palestinians will not live in these new homes...
...humor in the second skit, "Variations on the Death of Trotsky," is much more blatant. Like "Sure Thing," "Trotsky" offers numerous interpretations of the same scene: in this case, the moments before Trotsky's death. Throughout the skit, Trotsky (John Driscoll '99) has a mountain climber's ax sticking out of his skull, although he doesn't realize until Mrs. Trotsky (Elena Schneider '99) points it out. Although "Variations on the Death of Trotsky" isn't as witty or keenly observant as "Sure Thing," it's hard to resist lines like "maybe he was just hot-to-Trotsky." Driscoll...
