Bolivar County lies down on the rich delta lands of Mississippi opposite the mouth of the Arkansas River. In 1887, when the track of what is now the dinky Yazoo & Mississippi Valley Railroad was laid, Bolivar's rich bottomlands were an uninhabited jungle. The railroad, eager for customers along the route, but fearing that white men would die off under the hot summer sun, decided to try Negroes. Isaiah T. Montgomery, a onetime slave of Jefferson Davis, and his cousin Benjamin T. Green were induced to start a colony. Thus was founded the town of Mound Bayou. Last week...
Last week the City of New York defeated a $1,000 damage suit by a similar courtroom gesture. A Mrs. Marion Owens, watching some Park Department tree sprayers, was accidentally hit in her open mouth by a squirt of insecticide. Although the Park Department claimed the spray was an oil mixture harmless to humans, Mrs. Owens alleged that it burned her throat. Last week in court, Assistant Corporation Counsel Aaron J. Arnold lifted a pint bottle of the insecticide to his lips, downed a lusty swig, won the case...

In a lawsuit brought by a disgruntled consumer who had found a drowned black widow spider in the bottom of his Coca-Cola bottle, Curator Fattig put a live, wriggling black widow spider into his mouth, crunched and swal- owed it, sat quietly in the courtroom the rest of the session. Since chemical action of carbonated water sterilizes insect matter, Curator Fattig thinks nothing at all of downing such sodaed morsels as grasshoppers, houseflies, small toads and frogs, wasps, stink bugs, beetles, caterpillars, earthworms, centipedes...
...plane if he is to test-fly it. Last winter Tomlinson made constant trips to the substratosphere in the single-motored Gamma. Devil-may-care as ever, he spurned any such oxygen suit as Wiley Post wore, merely bundled up warmly, stuck an oxygen tube in his mouth. Says he: "I don't know what it may do to me eventually. Doctors say it may kill me, but I reckon not. I have to build up to each flight by drinking lots of milk and sleeping long hours and when I get down I have bloody noses...
Joseph Stalin last week was in such genial spirits that, when publicly welcoming the Soviet North Pole Expedition home to Moscow, he kissed its chief, heavily bearded Professor Otto Schmidt, full on the mouth. Also back in Moscow last week from their Coronation trip to England were U. S. Ambassador and Mrs. Joseph E. Davies, he bent on making an immediate tour of the Ukraine. As if most of the Soviet Union were not weltering in a lather of treason trials, executions and suicides of Big Reds, and purges from the Communist Party which its news-organs reported under screamers...
