...when seven G.I.s promised $185 to get a buddy to Korea. In six months, the red-faced Army admitted last week, Coogan-Huller cleared $1,750 from ten soldiers, in all shipped at least 18 to chosen places abroad, had four customers ready to travel when the word-of-mouth ad campaign reached one ear too many...
Such is my faith in Harvard. But I am not alone in my adoration for America's oldest college. One member of an English class, venting her enthusiasm for Harvard, remarked, "I just can't get the smile off my face. I try to close my mouth, but it breaks with a smile." Upon querying another summer student as to whether or not she was a regular member of the Harvard family, I received the prompt and concise reply, "No, I wish I were...
...North Viet Nam-meet in a tangle of ill-defined boundaries. The local Meos and kindred tribesmen delicately pierce the flowering buds, extract the sticky raw opium. Another masterwork...
Avoid "Janitor." Encyclopedic in managerial lore, Nickerson is perhaps most fascinating in discussing the semantics of the trade. In what might be called Nickerson's Law of Apartment Ad Copy, it turns out that "redecorated" and "spacious" will make a prospective tenant's mouth water more longingly than any other words. "Owner" is the O.K. word today for landlord ("The New Deal fostered a bitter reaction to 'Landlord' "). An accomplished owner delegates most of his work to his "manager" ("Avoid the word 'janitor' ... a higher-class manager can be hired by referring...
