...union seemed too slow and expensive Vassar changed its mind, decided to open an exchange program this winter with Williams, the little Ivy League all-male college (enrollment 1,230) in Williamstown, Mass. About 20 Vassar women will attend Williams, while a corresponding number of Williams men will move to Poughkeepsie. The exchange with Williams may be towed by similar ties with other men's colleges in order to see what adjustments Vassar must make to handle men. Eventually, the school expects to lose its identity as a women's college by enrolling a high proportion...
Safe from Quakes. An odd combination of economic forces lies behind the downtown rebirth. Transit-shy Angelenos rely almost entirely on autos to move around their 464-sq.-mi. city, whose boundaries could encompass the combined areas of St. Louis, Cleveland, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Boston, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Manhattan. While the auto made it easy for Los Angeles to sprawl, earthquake fears made it difficult for the city to grow vertically. She races ahead-then turns back to help him put of his girdle. And the charge itself is almost entirely successful. The rigid troops move forward like wind-up toy soldiers, under the hypnotic spell of unquestioned tradition. The firing begins; the hoofs and bodies and blood combine. Screams and guns seem to reach beyond the screen. The hysteria and terror are as palpable as dust; the slaughter is a testament to the inanity...
...real problem is that the residents of the area in silent general and Vellucci in noisy particular know in their hearts that the Federal bureaucrat is right--but for themselves and for non-monetary reasons. Everyone there would cash in and move out if they weren't so attached to the neighborhood and to the distinctive way of life that characterizes...
